eval 7

Evaluation seven- Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Throughout the process of me choosing the design for my magazine to the target audience i feel as though i have really developed and expanded my knowledge on my chose category, i feel as though since my pre lim task, i have looked more in depth to find out more interests and likes of my category to really be able to develop my magazine to something my target audience would want to read and buy. Something that i have changed from my pre lim task is the image and the font i have chose to lay over the top of the image i felt by doing this it made the magazine look more 'realistic' for the audience and would fit better on a shelf if it was ever to be published.

it was important to have done the preliminary task because it allowed me to notice the faults within my skills and the areas in which i was able to focus on and improve like the area of my picture taking and the layout of the magazine, by doing the pre lim task it made me want to think more about the audience and in what they would want to see instead of what i would want to see, it also allowed me to explore more colour palettes and ranges in what works well together and what doesn't, by exploring this i came out with my final magazine with the colour balance of what i think i have achieved from my findings and for me and my target audience it works.i also changed the mast head font style to a more sleek and bold font to draw in well with my magazine, it made my magazine more individual and to stand out more from the other text i was using which was rather generic throughout magazines

But for both magazines there were elements that i decided to keep the same like the type of camera angle and shots, i chose to stick to the close up to mid shot, as i feel this was just a very generic convection to capture the emotion of the artist and to be able to create the eye contact between the reader and the artist, by keeping this the same it allowed me to see that my preliminary task was useful as it showed that i didn't have to change every single element i just had to touch up and improve on some areas in which i was weaker than others.

Overall i feel i have learnt a myriad of skills form the start of my preliminary task to the final product, i feels though i have changed my thought process in to a more individual mindset which allowed me to access the thought process of my target audience which allowed me to achieve my final product to the standard and their liking, hopefully achieving something they would want to read and buy when they saw it on the shelf

How did you attract/address your audience-

Cover-

The cover is the first thing that the reader will see of your magazine so it is important that for my magazine that the cover was bold and statement but kept within the classic conventions of a magazine such as I-D, i wanted my cover to be within this style as it is featured a lot throughout indie alternative magazines. For my mast head i noticed that throughout magazines mast heads were often the colour black and in a bold font, i followed this and made my mast head black and bold but placed it on a grey background so it was able to stand out more on the page without taking away from the Centre image. As i learnt from various research it was important that for my artist to feature on the front cover they must have an approachable looking face with simplistic looking clothes and make up so it doesn't draw away from any of the magazine but also is still able to make a statement, this is why i chose to follow generic conventions and dress Luna Grace in black clothing and kept her make up to a minimal for the natural indie styling vibe, also it was important for the artist to address the audience by looking straight into the camera lens creating eye con act with the reader, to create a feel for the reader as though they felt like they knew the artist, this can be seen to of been created on magazines like SPEX magazine as they feature a lot of head on shots with the artist looking straight into the camera lens

Contents-

The contents page is something that will strike the reader to want to read more and more, it is important that within the contents page you carry on the style that you have to run with the rest of your magazine, but it is also very important for the reader to be sucked into the page to want to read more about the interesting headlines you have featured to grasp their attention, i went for a design that is simple but statement include bold black font and having the page number a little larger than the font, by doing this i am challenging conventions as this isn't often seen throughout other contents pages, but it allows me to explore ways in which i can potentially trap the readers eye and the ways in which they are easily able to access story lines without having to search what page number it is on. it was important for the contents page to be very informative and to feature images to again draw and catch the readers eye but also to break the page up so it looked attractive to the eye, by keeping it black and white i feel as though the black  and the bold font allows itself to stand out on the crisp white background following the look and styling on the double page spread.

double page-
On my double page spread have followed very generic conventions of many magazines like id magazine and spex magazine, i have chose to feature on side of the double page as a full sized image and the other side with two colours of font, this reason for me doing this is because i didn't follow generic conventions for my contents page i felt it was needed for me to follow the conventions to be able to attract my audience as they may not like taking a risk with something different as for the young alts category they like things in a certain way and that how they like them, and with something like a double pages i felt necessary for me to include a bigger picture on one side to showcase the artist which is often found in many other magazines, whilst keeping the other side with a mast heading in a bold font but then in a smaller font having my interview with LUNA GRACE which was kept to two Collums long but featured a lot of interesting questions which are often found in and other indie alternative magazine

what would be the audience for your media product?

After extensive research into my target audience for my iodine alternative magazine, i found that my music magazine would be for both men and women between the ages of 16-25, i think  my music magazine is convenient and suitable for this audience as it is current and happening like this age group, it is up and coming and features the latest music event and social events in which would attract this target audience mostly, it mostly would attract this target audience also for the styling, it is very modern and up to date, it features bold and clean fonts in which the age group would be attracted and drawn to. My magazine contains content for each individual ages category of this target audience, it con taints new artists which the younger audience may be more attracted to but then it contains old artists such as Lana Del Ray which the older end of the audience may be attracted to, My magazine allows both old and younger readers from my target audience to get involved and share common interests with things such as the latest up coming festivals as ages from my target audience category are all a valid age to be able to go to a concert, this reference a real media product as it features something for everyone in which the reader would never feel excluded from the magazine point and they would always feel like they have some sort of evolvement within the 'I-M' Magazine

Eval 1

EVALUATION ONE: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (I.e. of music magazines)

My cover could be classed as fitting the typical convections of a front cover as I have used the same layout and style of design as ‘I-D'  magazine, however there are still differences between the two but they do not draw away from my magazine looking like a magazine.
Also I feel as though on my front cover the picture that I have used, a mid shot with her looking into the camera fits in with the magazine as with other magazines eye contact is being made and a mid shot as been used, showing the resemblance between the two, and how the eye contact of the shot involves the audience. By having the image with 'Luna-Grace' looking straight into the camera lens it follows generic conventions of a magazine style as it is often seen throughout magazines for eye contact to be made wight eh reader and the image on the front for maximum potential.

It is important on a magazine to include details such as the issue number and the season, this adds more style to the magazine and indicates back to more generic conventions of a typical magazine that you may see on the shelf, I chose to put these in black as on my magazine the image takes up the whole front cover but wight he black font it stands out enough for the reader to be able to notice it, also on the front cover of my magazine i have included hints of grey font and a grey box at the bottom of the page, by adding the grey i feel i am challenging convections of a real media product as grey isn't often seen on the front for things like the font as it  can be a challenging colour to work with.

For my mast head i used ----------- i decided to use this font as because my mast head is quite short i needed something bold enough to make it stand out on the page, but also to not take away from the image or the other text on the page with the font -------- i feel i chose the right amount of boldness and depth to make it work on the front cover and to add style and edge to my magazine, i also put this in the colour black and overlaid it with a grey box to make it pop even more and for it to tie in with the rest of the magazine

My Model/Music artist Luna-Grace was styled on the likes of the models in the I-D magazine as they are dressed in very simple clothing blacks and whites, not huge colour pallet to be used, I only dressed Luna in simple clothing as a patterned colour top wouldn’t of looked correct or would have blended in right with the colour range of my magazine, it would've clashed with the type of photo i have chose to use and it would've draw away front any text on the front of the magazine

Double page-

For my double i feel as though i do follow a generic convention, i chose to have half the magazine as an image then the other half as a font, by following generic conventions for my indie alternative music magazine i feel as though i am reaching the potential to attract the full audience that would be able to read and would want to read my magazine without it being too out their or too over stylised for my kind of audience who within my planning and research 'Young Alts' Like to consider themselves as individual but also like things to be clean and simple and not too out their just how they would dress themselves, so i also decided that for my image on my double page spread i kept the image simple but i did add a bit of a twist by having Luna looking into the mirror, i felt this image was challenging conventions as it wasn't playing to the generic conventions of a mid or long shot which can often be found in an indie music styled magazine

Contents -

For my contents page i kept the colours to black and white to tie in with the front of the magazine and the double page spread, by doing this i was ensuring i had a flow throughout my magazine. For my double page spread i followed generic conventions and had the page numbers slightly bigger than the font, this can often be found in magazine as it indicates to the reader where to go and instantly jumps out at them, i chose to feature two images within my page which allows the audience to have an insight into my magazine and see what is featuring throughout

magazine layout plan 2

I-M name planning

From my research and planning that i have been doing over the past couple of weeks, i have concluded to the name I-M, i feel this follows the generic convections of an indie music magazine and it allows it to carry on following convections throughout the process of the whole of my magazine, hopefully achieving a fully believable magazine.
